IAP Internship Program

The inspiration for our internship program began while Ned Simerlein was a performance specialist at International Performance Institute at IMG Academies in Bradenton, Florida.  Ned then developed the program and brought it to Velocity Sports Performance in Trumbull, Connecticut.  In 2009, with the opening of Integrated Athletic Performance, the internship program continues to grow and offer a high level of education for all participants through Ned and the rest of the IAP staff.

We guarantee that when you complete an internship at IAP you will leave with a wealth of information that will help you grow as a coach, trainer, and individual.  Our program has not only provided many employment opportunities within the organization, but has allowed coaches and trainers move on and have great success at other gyms, sports clubs, professional sports teams, universities and performance facilities.

Intern Training:

The curriculum of our internship program covers the four movement themes of our sports performance based training – acceleration, multi-directional, maximum velocity, and transitional movements.  Lectures will cover the science behind each movement and practical’s will be learning and mastering the movement mechanics, then learning the proper coaching techniques, and finally how to coach an athlete.

A major responsibility of an intern will be weight room coverage.  This is where athletes will be taken through their specific strength programs.  Education will cover all the power progressions: the Vertimax, plyo-metrics, Olympic lifts, and jump squats. Strength progressions will include:

  • Core – Draw In, Stability, Linear, and Rotational
  • Prehab – Shoulder, Knee, Ankle, and Hip
  • Upper and Lower Body Pulls
  • Upper and Lower Body Pushes

Periodization and program design will cover the methods used to write off-season, pre-season, and in-season strength programs; including linear and non-linear models and also weight loss/gain templates.

Regeneration will be a lecture and practical on how this process is used to allow the body to properly recover from training to prevent the onset of overtraining.

Nutrition: lectures on how athletes should be eating for weight gain, weight loss, or maintenance of the weight the athlete is currently at.  This includes pre and post exercise consumption, proper supplementation, and food journals.

Part of our performance programs include flexibility.  It will be the responsibility of the interns to properly warm-up and take groups through stretches.

Education will consist of learning the fundamentals of an active dynamic warm-up, when touse static stretches and how to do them properly, partner stetches, and also implementation on the practices of yoga into a training program.

Sport specific movements and open field mechanics will be taught so the proper running mechanics can be applied to an athletes specific sport and positional needs.

Another very important aspect of our internship program is testing and evaluations.  We test all athletes pre, mid, and post for measured results.  Training will be on our evaluation process, set-up, and implementation with all athletes. Proper techniques for performing a body composition and circumference testing, as well as weekly weigh-ins is all part of our testing and evaluations procedures.

Other aspects of the IAP internship program include:

NFL Combine Training, MLB Spring Training Preparation, Personal Training techniques, and Athletic Training and Rehabilitation.

Sales and Marketing training will specifically cover how to offer a high level of customer service and selling the product of athletic performance.  Management and Leadership will also be included, focusing on strategies in the performance/fitness industries to maximize production, minimize cost, and run a successful business.
